Henri de Vallombreuse is famous for pots similar to this one. As this example demonstrates, his use of glaze remains usually limited. His ceramic creations are therefore organic and natural looking. They nevertheless required incredible skill in glazing and firing techniques.
This swamp pot is no exception. The ceramist chose a very simple, cylindrical shape. The occasional orange glaze drops visible on the main body contrast with the predominant earthly tones of the vase. Rivulets of brown glaze running down the sides are also apparent, repeatedly overshadowing the orange patches. The organic effect achieved by the ceramist is the result of precise glazing and firing techniques, for which de Vallombreuse is well known.
Marks: Inscribed Vallombreuse, stamped cipher at base.
