Alfred Daguet’s Viking Warrior chest, dating from around the year 1904, is constructed of repoussé copper panels applied over a wooden structure. This metal surface is enriched with what are called cabochons, small polished stones in a variety of bright colors. In the center of the chest’s lid, a mustachioed Viking warrior bears a large sword and a shield emblazoned with the face of a wild animal. The two copper medallions flanking him depict Viking ships at sail in rough seas, encircled by rings of alternating pink and blue cabochons. Featured on the sails of these ships is the same eye motif that is pictured on the warrior’s winged helmet. The front, sides, and back of the box feature more abstract panels of hammered copper, with organic motifs composed of geometric shapes that wind around colorful stones.
