This ringed double-gourd, accented with a freely-flowing blue glaze layered over a creamy white one, typifies the Japan-influenced aesthetic sensibilities of Carriès. One may note that the glaze seems to drip from the bottom up— through the addition of such details, the potter seeks to make use of the unique material properties of glaze, which reminds the viewer of the process behind the production of stoneware, bringing the method behind the manipulation of the ceramic medium to the forefront of this work.
