The crowning element of this hard earthenware candlestick is glazed and textured to resemble hammered bronze. The handle that links the bobeche element to the base resembles a cascade of hardened candle wax. The suggestion that a fragile wax drip could be used to carry a heavy candlestick adds an element of whimsy to the piece. It is further decorated with a superb matte, opalescent and iridescent glazes in shades of green, pink, yellowish-beige and purplish-blue. This is a fine example of the designer's talent for combining novel forms with functional objects. Designed by Paul Dachsel for Amphora. Marks: stamped manufacturer's cipher; 854; 22.
