The surface of the Volcanic Sulfur Pot does indeed appear to be molten, the highly irregular and highly textured resulting from layers and layers of glaze. The presence of both perforations and raised areas gives the pot the appearance of dried volcanic rock. The color scheme also contributes to this characterization, as areas of brown and orange glaze appear to flow over one another.
