Interlaced carvings such as those on the end pieces of this bench are the hallmark of the Viking style, an expression of Norwegian nationalism celebrating Norway’s separation from Sweden. The exposed keyed-tenon construction is a further allusion to eras past. Traveling noblemen prized furniture that could be disassembled and reassembled easily. A matching bench appeared in the landmark exhibition, The Arts & Crafts Movement in Europe & America: Design for the Modern World, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2004. Other examples are in the collections of The Dallas Museum of Art, the Musée d'Orsay, Paris and the Louvre, Abu Dhabi.
