A rare and important stoneware vase by Ernest Carriere, this piece is decorated with low-relief cats chasing and catching rats. The thickly potted form is glazed in mat tan with brown accents. Ernest Carriere was the brother of Symbolist painter Eugene Carriere, and was himself an accomplished painter, sculptor, and member of the Societe des Artistes Francais from 1888.
