The ceramist-sculptor who created this whimsical pitcher combined real and imaginary details to arrive at a monstrous but lovable fish. The dynamic shaping of the lip and handle offer a sense of forward motion. At the same time, the incisions and impressions that indicate eyes, scales, and fins caused the translucent glaze to pool, giving the impression that water clings to the body. Mark: stamped in the clay BRETEUIL EURE and the cipher AR, within a circle.
