Theodore Haviland

The history of Haviland China begins with David Haviland, a partner in a New York-based firm that imported English and French dinnerware. He moved his family to Limoges, France, in 1841 to begin his own factory. In 1872, David's son Charles opened a Paris studio, where "Haviland Barbotine" was first produced. After David Haviland's death in 1879, the firm passed to his two sons, Theodore and Charles. An irreconcilable disagreement lead to the creation of two separate Haviland china companies. Charles began "Haviland et Cie," while Theodore Haviland established a factory under his own name. Theodore Haviland's mark is shown above.
