Founded as Thomas Minton and Sons, Mintons had been producing standard domestic tableware until 1851, when they introduced their colorful majolica at the Great Exhibition. The firm later added high-quality work inspired by Chinese cloisonné enamels, Japanese lacquer, and Turkish pottery. Christopher Dresser created historical revival designs for the firm. In 1902, Mintons introduced Vienna-Secession-influenced ware. Ornamental work, tableware and toilet sets in Art Nouveau forms were decorated with majolica glazes that were often contained within trailed or molded outlines.
Mintons Ltd is not to be confused with the related tile-making firm Minton Hollins & Co formed by Minton in partnership with Michael Hollins in 1845.
