Marguerite Van Biesbroeck

Marguerite Van Biesbroeck was born in Gent to a family of artists and scientists. After completing studies ceramics and pattern design, she exhibited in 1901 with the Cercel Artistique et Littéraire (in Gent), in 1903 at the Salon de Bruxelles, and in 1907 at the Exposition Générale des Beaux-Arts de Bruxelles. In 1910 she and her sister-in-law Julia Sterpin Van Biesbroeck (also a ceramic designer and the wife of Marguerite’s brother, astronomer George Van Biesbroeck) held an exhibition of their work. Pieces by both artists are in the collection of the Gent Museum of Design. Nothing is known of Marguerite’s work after 1910. In 1915, George Van Biesbroeck accepted a position at the Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay, Wisconsin. Marguerite joined his and his family there in 1919.
