Karl Perl, a sculptor and engraver, was born in Liezen, a city in the Austrian state of Steiermark. The majority of his sculptures are relatively small (under two feet). Perl studied under Edmond von Hellmer, Kaspar von Zumbusch, and Carl Kundmann, and he worked in Vienna as a sculptor of figures, busts, bas-reliefs, and medallions. He also produced a series of small plaques depicting scenes from popular folk and fairy tales.
