Jean Barol

Jean Barol, a glaze artist who had learned metallic luster techniques while working with Clément Massier, subsequently helped establish BACS in Cannes in 1911 with three other artists from the Massier factory - Marius Alexandre, Jean Carle, and François Sicard. Together they found new techniques for applying high-fired enamel 'cloisonné' decoration to metallic lustre-glazed vessels. The firm also created ceramics decorated with enamel-glazed, impressionist style landscapes.

Barol later left Cannes with colleague François Sicard to found Montieres in 1917. The new company produced luster-glazed work in the early years and moved on to create highly stylized ornaments, sometimes on the same shapes that had been designed for earlier lusterware. Barol rejoined BACS three years later, in 1920, and remained until 1927, after which he continued as a ceramist in Vallauris until his death, at 93.
