Herman Kähler

Ceramist Joachim Christian Herman Kähler (1808-1884) left the duchy of Holstein in 1839 and established a studio in Nestved, Denmark. Until 1872, when his sons Herman August and Carl Frederik took over the pottery, the firm produced all-night burners and kitchen utensils. Herman established what we today know as Kählers Pottery in 1875, while Carl sold his share of the business. In the 1880s, Herman became interested in art pottery and devoted to rediscovering the red luster glaze used by the Italian maestro Giorgio from Gubbio in the 16th century. In 1888 he perfected the ruby glaze which is known today as "Kähler red".
