A cabinet vase with an ovoid lower body topped by a soft-edged, stepped pyramid, this intriguing piece is decorated with Dalpayrat's signature sang de boeuf glaze, dappled with blue, purple, and gold. The glaze has been allowed to drip and run, spontaneously exposing the ochre underglaze. The nonrepresentational form and decoration of this example bespeak Dalpayrat's interest in the fundamentals of Japanese design as they were understood by avant garde ceramicsts of the early 20th century. Signed Dalpayrat in script on the base.
