This unusual vase is undoubtedly one of Massier's most abstract creations. Its truncated conical form, streaked with luster glaze, resembles a lava-splashed volcano. The columns of diagonally impressed triangles suggest gashes and contribute to the drama of the design. Although completely without figural decoration, the vase evokes the power of a natural phenomenon. Marks: stamped and painted glaze artist's name, Golfe Juan, (AM)
