Like many of Massier's early luster pieces and the Hispano-Moresque wares that inspired them, this vase makes the most of only two colors. Here, red ferns unfold in graceful arabesques against an iridescent turquoise underglaze. The body-twist creates a sense of dynamism, conveys the plasticity of clay, and allows the fern decoration to move in three dimensions. Marks: painted artist's initials.
