This charming cabinet vase has the most desirable features of a great work by Adrien Dalpayrat: splendid proportion, interesting hand-tooling, and a unique flambé glaze. A stunningly curvaceous baluster, this example has three regularly-spaced protuberances at shoulder level that add an element of virility. Dalpayrat's signature sang de boeuf glaze, subject as it is to the vicissitudes of varying oxygen supply, here appears to show nearly equal parts oxblood and verdigris (its oxidized counterpart). The "shoulders," because they protrude, have shed the sang de boeuf glaze, appearing even more prominent because of their natural stoneware color.
