Part illuminated manuscript, part Egyptian architectural ornament, all aesthetic Movement, the intertwining palmettes, egg and dart frieze, and locusts hiding in the thistles all take on a spiritual quality under the iridescent glaze. The crisp lines and impeccable order with which this piece was executed provides a bold contrast with the elusive luster glaze. We thank Bernadette De loose, adjunct director of the Design Museum Gent, for the identification. Marks: painted artist’s name 1911 / fragment of paper label
