In a perfect example of German Art Nouveau ceramics, this white porcelain vase has been glazed in a tan cutout pattern, one that gradually lightens toward the base of the work. On the underside of the mouth, Schmutz-Baudiss has rendered floral designs in the darkest areas of glaze. This color, which gradually thins in shape toward the bottom of the vase, fades almost to white as it depicts stemmed rose buds blooming from the vase’s foot. In an artistic move typical of this style, Schmutz-Baudiss has transformed irregular, natural vegetal images into regular, organized patterns.
