Description

This wide-necked, nearly cylindrical vase is distinguished by a stylized depiction of trees in a snowy landscape. Theodore Schmutz-Baudiss, a German painter and ceramist, designed this vase for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory (KPM) in Berlin, where he was art director from 1902 to 1926. Noted for the underglaze painting of landscapes and other views on vases, tile panels, plaques and display plates, he is credited with increasing KPM's palette of underglaze colors with subtle translucent shades that were applied with an airbrush.
