Description

Edward Stellmacher (attributed) for Amphora. This exceedingly rare pitcher form depicts a monstrous fish under attack by a double-headed sea serpent. The serpent’s body emerges fully from the vessel to form an arched handle. While the subject is complex and violent, its glaze treatment is masterfully restrained. Because only the serpent and fish are coated in luster, they contrast with the somber red-brown background. Marks: Impressed manufacturer's cipher.
