Circular earthenware bowl with marine imagery in iridescent metallic luster glaze. Artistic director of Massier’s luster studio, Lévy-Dhurmer was also the most brilliant decorator in that operation. Here he combined stylized sea urchins, depicted in both positive and negative polarities, with a vermiform pattern suggestive of undersea life forms or the movement of water itself. This interplay of representation and abstraction is a key component of his unique painted decoration of pottery.

Marks: Enamelled signatures.
