Ernest Chaplet, famous ceramist whose international reputation was sealed after winning a gold medal at the Paris Universal Exposition, completed this stoneware bottle by the end of his career. The blood red glaze (Sang de boeuf, or beef blood) used to adorn the surface of the object immediately catches the viewer’s attention. His production of this particular glaze was itself an achievement. The bottle’s texture remains coarse despite the application of glaze, creating a visually and texturally interesting surface. The three rings preceding the vase’s mouth, as well as its elongated neck, also distinguish this vase from more traditional shapes.
Marks: Signed rosary, "E" and dated 1899.
