The glaze on this example of Delaherche's work is a sensitive blending of earthy ochres and browns enlivened by a small turquoise element that seems to be bubbling up from below the otherwise placid surface. French ceramists such as Delaherche, having observed similar effects on prized Japanese showpieces, experimented with the unpredictable effects of high fire upon ceramic glazes. In the pared down Japonist aesthetic that resulted, glazes and their effects, integral as they were to the object as a whole, were considered the perfect form of ornamentation.
