Description

Manufactured by the Saint-Dizier foundry, this jardiniere is one of a series that Guimard designed for general use by other architects. The process of creating his cast ironwork began with beautifully realized sketches, in which Guimard elaborated in great detail all aspects of a design. The factory created prototypes and molds from which multiples would later be cast. Like other planters by Guimard, this example conveys the dynamism of growth despite its symmetrical forms and ornamentation. Vine-like elements provide a framework for the decor and arise from the rim to form several loops and three handles. Leaves seem to struggle to break the surface of the central panel and project forth to form a splayed base. These devices reflect Guimard's handling of other media, where flat surfaces are animated by organic surges and depressions.
