Decorated by Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer, this unusual jardinière marries hexagonal feet and cups to an ovoid body, resulting in a simple yet inventive form. The hexagon, a recurring shape in Islamic art, may here reflect Lévy-Dhurmer's fascination with the culture of his Algerian homeland, or the Massier firm's customary appropriation of exotic influences. Lévy-Dhurmer's hand-painted décor of thistle plants has been executed in Massier’s familiar palette of purples, blues, and greens, enlivened by flashes of orange, red, and raspberry.

Marks: Painted Clément Massier, Levy.
