Edmond Lachenal's interest in carved and reticulated sculptural vessels began in the mid-1890s. The asymmetrical composition of this vase ties it stylistically both to Japonisme and Art Nouveau, styles that commingled with increasing frequency in French art pottery of the early 1900s. Like much of Lachenal's earthenware, this vase is covered with his signature velvet opaque glaze. Production pieces such as the present one popularized Lachenal's work among middle-class consumers.
