This virile form is an elaboration of the double gourd, with the clay of the upper section pulled down in three places to meet the shoulder of the lower section. The streaks and speckles of black and blue on the flambé glaze result partially from the masterful shaping of the clay. Overall, the piece shows the influence of Japanese aesthetics but, in its monumentality, it is undeniably French. Marks: Dalpayrat in glaze on base.
