Imminent danger seems to be the theme of this exciting blood-red vase. The realistic rendering of the creeping crab simultaneously suggests the work of sixteenth-century French ceramist Bernard Palissy, lively drawings taken from Japanese sketchbooks, and contemporaneous Japanese pottery.
