The hand-painted design on this charger suggests Islamic pottery in color and décor. The central motif, a tiger biting the hindquarters of a deer-like animal while observed by a second fierce cat, is virtually identical to motifs found on Iznik chargers of the late sixteenth century. Ancient silver chargers inspired the rim’s form, which had become familiar in the vocabulary of European ceramics by the early nineteenth century. Marks: impressed Lachenal, painted green
