This unusual black ceramic tankard is distinguished by relief sculpture of four stylized flowers. The matte black glaze may have been chosen to suggest pewter, one of the materials traditionally used for drinking vessels. The metal hinge, with its vegetal flourish, is aesthetically compatible with the floral décor. Walter Magnussen was born in Hamburg and worked in Munich at the time that this piece was created. The subtlety of the ceramic ornamentation recalls the fine stylized carving that appears on ebonized furniture by Patriz Huber, also a Munich-based designer.
