Typical of Carlo Bugatti’s work of his early period, this table’s strikingly original ornamentation results from a tasteful brew of influences. While the top is decorated with intarsia patterns picturing Japanese characters, broken reeds, flowers, fish, reptiles and insects, the apron is composed of Moresque arches and each leg is partially wrapped in a beaten copper ribbon. Participation in international exhibitions brought critical attention and commercial success to the designer. In New York in the late 880s, the Waldorf Astoria selected Bugatti’s furniture to outfit its Turkish Salon and in 900 he was awarded the silver medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle.
