This mosaic is the result of the assemblage of several photographs taken by Surveyor I on the Moon, in July 1966. Surveyor can actually be seen, as well as its shadow, at the bottom of the mosaic. The lunar horizon is also visible in the background. For 6 weeks, Surveyor transmitted 11,150 high-resolution pictures back to Earth. The pictures were assembled as mosaics to form large-scale photographs. Surveyor I’s photographs proved extremely useful to get an understanding of the soil’s texture and structure – fine rock dust.
