Description

An elongated double gourd form, this vase is especially notable for a flambé glaze that metamorphoses almost imperceptibly from pale ochre with a blue circlet just below the lip, to a deeper ochre on the upper half of the body, to streaks of russet, green and brown at the base. Concentrated near the top and continuing down the body in diminishing density, splashes of white resemble droplets of water or frost. Overall the décor suggests a ripe autumnal gourd covered with morning dew. The gourd, which in its natural state was dried and used as a vessel in many early civilizations, was represented in a variety of vessels by Asian ceramists for centuries. Europeans, inspired by Asian ceramics that began to appear in the West in increasing numbers in the late 19th century, adapted the form to suit their own aesthetics. Marks: stamped manufacturer's mark, 1900.
