This elegant stoneware vase has a robust spherical body and a graceful trumpet neck ending in a flaring rim. While in profile it is reminiscent of Turkish ceramic bottles of the sixteenth century, the foliate surface decoration at the shoulder and pitted glaze adhere more closely to the Japanese naturalist aesthetic. Son of Edmond Lachenal, Raoul Lachenal began exhibiting his stoneware for the first time at Paris salons in 1904, the year that this vase was made. Marks: Inscribed Lachenal, artist's cipher, 1904.
