The flambé glaze on this vase evokes the famous sang de boeuf glazes perfected by Ernest Chaplet around 1889. The tall body also resembles Chaplet's Chinese-inspired forms from the early 1890s, although the addition of botanical elements on the shoulder and lip illustrate Lachenal's subtle application of Art Nouveau style. The alternating inward- and outward-curving petals that form the lip create a rhythmic line that is simultaneously balanced and animated. Marks: Lachenal [painted]
