The gaunt miner depicted on the metal plaque shown here is closely related to the haunting faces shown in the Meunier's Monument to Labour and in his charcoal sketch, Miners from Borinage, now in the collection of The Grohmann Museum of the Milwaukee School of Engineering, in Wisconsin, USA. The style of the relief is harshly unidealized in the manner of Rodin, while the theme expresses the sentiments of mid-19th century Christian Socialism of the sort espoused by William Morris. This compelling work represents important chapters in modern social and art history.
