Iridescent orchids ornate the bottom and neck of this otherwise dark-glazed vase produced at the turn of the century in Italy. Pottery with iridescent luster was in fashion throughout Europe at the time of the vase's production. The organic subject matter of this earthenware is also reminiscent of Art Nouveau themes and visual culture. Galileo Chini gained a reputation in the ceramic world incorporating figurative organic elements to an overall abstract and simple visual language.
