This painting, acquired from the Jean Mayodon atelier in 2004, is a study for “Tryptique pour un boudoir,” a ceramic tile installation exhibited at the 1937 Exposition International in Paris. One of the few known large-scale paintings by Mayodon, its subject matter of cavorting mermen and other mythical creatures of the ancient world is directly related to the slip painted imagery on many of Mayodon’s ceramics.
