Description

While the two stylized harts that leap joyfully across the surface of this golden vessel express the boundless vitality of the Jazz Age, they also suggest several elements of medieval symbolism. The overall golden glaze recalls the heavens of murals, mosaics, and manuscripts. Backward-looking animals, be they deer or dragons, frequented metalwork, manuscripts, and relief sculpture. And the hart was often employed as a symbol of Christ. Overall, Leaps Unbound is a clear departure from three of the dominant threads of Art Nouveau aesthetics: detailed naturalism, non-representationalism, and nationalism. Instead we have a vessel that may have symbolic meaning but certainly bespeaks the international language of light-hearted, urbane luxury. It is formed of stoneware. The harts and decorative spirals are loosely painted with enamels, and outlined with irregular pink-gold borders. Marks: painted artist's name
