Description

The shocking synthesis of geographically remote ceramic traditions sets these superb porcelain vases apart from their Aesthetic-period ancestors. Here, a Japonist high-temperature drip glaze on gourdshaped vessels is ornamented with apple green medallions featuring Renaissance-inspired putti. The miniature scenes of revelry are executed in glossy white pâte-sur-pâte with a precision that recalls carved cameos. Made shortly after Doat’s triumphant display at the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, these vases demonstrate the artist’s unparalleled ability to combine different types of clay and glaze effects, all the while accounting for varying degrees of shrinkage during firing.
