The exceptionally inventive glaze on this Japanese-inspired form makes a deliberately ambiguous reference to natural forces. It could be mistaken for an ancient glass vase with an encrustation of volcanic ash or for a metal relic with spots of oxidation. Edmond Lachenal was one of the leaders of the French ceramics revolution and was capable of working in a wide variety of styles. Marks: Painted E. Lachenal, A. 5G.
