In the irregularity of its form and the naturalism of its decoration, King Crab is an accomplished piece of pottery. A tall cone has been manipulated into an irregular shape to enhance the rippled, underwater effect of the background glaze. An extremely leggy crustacean envelops the form, extending its claws and antennae in all directions. Glaze effects near the foot suggest the disturbance of a murky seabed. Lerche exhibited pieces with similar décor in the Paris Salon of 1899. Marks: inscribed artist's name.
