This charming pitcher is aswirl with mauve, gold. and white glazes that suggest the natural colors of the garden. It is enhanced by a stunning metal mount in the form of iris stems and flowers. The mount was created by Lucien Gaillard, one of the greatest jewelery designers of his time. Gaillard had been his father's apprentice in the family jewelry firm from 1878 to 1892, when he took over the business. His work won critical acclaim when it was exhibited at Paris Salons in 1903 and 1904. His mastery of metal and form is clear in this example where the mount reinforces the fertile message of the pitcher and merges seamlessly with the undulations of the clay. The mount is hallmarked and dated 1905. Glatigny is incised in the clay on the base.
Produced by the Atelier de Galtigny in Versailles, this piece is an excellent example of fashionable ceramics created outside of Paris.
