This stunning stoneware charger has an applied decoration of irises executed in a deep brown aventurine glaze with leaves in pale speckled blue. The subject matter and its rendition reflects the influence of Japonisme in general and Japonist painting in particular. In the simplification of forms and tactile surface, Iris Garden recalls the lively iris paintings created by Vincent Van Gogh in the late 1880s, which in turn were inspired by Japanese screens paintings.
