This small pitcher takes the shape of a bug-eyed fish that could have been modeled on a picture from Hokusai's Manga or Ernst Haeckel's Art Forms in Nature. Stipples and lines incised into the surface have captured the white glaze, creating an irregular pattern that suggests scales. Mark: stamped in the clay BRETEUIL EURE and the cipher AR, within a circle. Breteuil is a commune in the department of Eure, in the region of Haute-Normandie. The artist is unknown.
