Probably Massier's most famous creation, the Grand Champignon perfectly marries form and decor, painting and sculpture, tangibility and suggestiveness. Executed as a series representing different times of day--midday, dusk and night...this vase shows the stylistic influence, direct or indirect, of Lévy-Dhurmer. As with many of his Symbolist decors, imagery and glazes are layered in order to evoke a world midway between dream and reality. Protruding stems ensure the mushrooms' maximal presence, while the web of brambles behind them composes a scrim through which another realm might be glimpsed. Warm colors like pink and orange evoke the luminous daylight that saturated Golfe-Juan year-round. The iridescent film of metallic luster coating the surfaces provides a shimmer similar to heat rising from the ground. Marks: M Clément Massier, Golfe-Juan, (AM) [glazed]
