Description
Although there was a late-19th-century European tradition of ceramic masks based upon earlier Japanese theatrical examples, this realistic face is based upon the life mask of Ludvig von Beethoven originally made by the sculptor Franz Klein in 1812. It is distinguished by a metallic golden glaze whose flickering reflections suggests the genius of the artist and the subject. It may have been created in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the original iconic image.
