This monumental bottle-vase is a perfect example of the generous application of Dalpayrat red, the oxblood glaze developed by Dalpayrat in the 1890s. A rich red, dappled with blue and hints of purple, it is used here to highlight a form that departs from the cylinder suggested at the base to arrive at a gesturally shaped shoulder. The shaping encourages pooling of glaze in some areas and the free flow of glaze in others. These features refer to the randomness and irregularity that was so prized in the examples of Japanese pottery that inspired Dalpayrat.
